Southern California’s Only Coastal Resort
Terranea Resort opened its doors in June 2009, completing the transformation from the abandoned MarineLand family theme park to a world-class oceanfront resort. Ten years and $480 million in the making, the Mediterranean-styled resort is set on 102-acres that span the coastline atop the bluffs in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Terranea offers public access to several miles of scenic bluff-top trails that connect to miles of off-property coastal trails.
Given the property’s prominent location and environmentally sensitive nature, local officials, area residents, naturalists and environmentalists were keenly interested in the plan for the property. Lowe worked closely with these constituencies to develop a plan that could be embraced by all parties. Terranea was built with care for the environment and respect for history of the property. Lowe preserved 45 original trees in boxes then replanted them when the property was completed, planted 14 acres of natural coastal sage scrub, created water quality systems to treat and clean rain water runoff and help protect the ocean and reused more than one hundred thousand tons of onsite rock which was crushed and quarried, then used throughout the Resort.
Terranea is equally popular with leisure visitors and groups, and can accommodate as many as 4 weddings taking place on the property simultaneously. The Resort also provides a popular gathering spot and amenity for the local community to enjoy the hiking trails, weekend entertainment in the lobby, programmed events on the lawn, and the public access picnic tables and fire pits positioned for the perfect view as dolphins and whales pass by and the sun sets over the Pacific.
